Yasumi Kojima
Name of Disability: Cerebral infarction (stroke), right hemiplegia
Type of assistance: walking assistance, role of handrail when on a staircase, picking up of dropped objects, aid when trying to stand

I chose to use the support of service dogs to compensate for my disabilities. There are two reasons – one because I wanted to be able to leave my house for work, and secondly because I did not want to trouble other people by asking for their help.

Miki Sato
Name of Disability: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
Type of assistance: picking up of dropped objects, opening and closing doors and closets, bringing requested objects, taking off socks

What was required of me to become a service dog owner? I did not know. Because I did not know anything about service dog owner requirements, I decided to research, visit training centers, consult the rehabilitation center, and persuade my family to agree with my decision of living with a service dog. Before I was granted my life with my service dog, I had to complete many tasks with the support of training centers. Seeing me develop both mentally and physically with my service dog, my parents who had originally strongly opposed my choice of living with a service dog, changed their minds to be the number 1 supporters of my decision.

Shunya Okumura
Name of Disability: Spinal Cord injury
Type of assistance: picking up dropped objects, bringing requested objects

I had times when I was depressed before I knew service dogs, but that changed after I made the decision to live with one; they make me think optimistically. Whenever I drop a key or a pen, my service dog will pick it up for me and bring it back to my lap as instructed. Service dogs helped me drastically change my opinion of life; I used to think I lived in a colorless, dull world. But living with a service dog helped me realize the joy and motivation in living life to its fullest.

Chiharu Okuhara
Name of Disability: Amyloid Neuropathy
Type of assistance: picking up dropped objects, walking assistance, taking off and putting on clothes, opening and closing doors, bringing drinks from the refrigerator

Due to progressive neuropathy, my body function is declining year by year. I wished to have a service dog that would assist my daily life, and through discussing with my family and doctor, I have started my life with a service dog. When I met my service dog for the first time, I was so delighted, my eyes almost filled up with tears thinking, “Whatever I go through from now on, my service dog will go through it with me”. I was worried about my constant changes in condition. It is strange though; through talking to my service dog (like saying “Hold on, I’ll get your food soon,”) to a joyful dog wagging its tail every morning; I’ve become less bedridden.
